A quality manager might receive a certificate from an NDT inspector and might think it’s valid if it has a certification number, certification level, the NDT method used, and an expiry date.
But just because a certificate looks well-made doesn’t mean it’s real or verified.
Before allowing an inspector to perform or record NDT procedures, a manufacturer should ask these questions: Who gave the certificate?
Is it still valid?Does it apply to this specific person?Which certification system is used?Does it cover the required NDT method and scope? And how can the certificate be checked?
According to ISO 9712:2021, the requirements for qualifying and certifying personnel who do industrial NDT include methods like UT, RT, MT, PT, ET, VT, and leak testing, among others.
For a practical guide to understanding the different levels of NDT certification, see “NDT Certification Levels 1, 2, 3: A Practical Guide for Quality Managers Recruiting Their First In-House Inspector” by First Welding Certification Pvt Ltd (PRVÁ ZVÁRAČSKÁ, a.
s.).This guide covers the factors quality managers should think about when choosing NDT personnel; this one, however, focuses only on how to check the certificate you are given.
A good NDT certification verification should include the following eight things:
| Confirm | What the Quality Manager Should Confirm |
|---|---|
| Certifying body | Is the certifying body traceable and authentic? |
| Certificate number | Can the certificate be traced independently? |
| Identity | Is the certificate traceable to the holder of the certificate? |
| Certification scheme | Is the certificate issued in accordance with the proper certification scheme? |
| NDT technique | Does the certificate address the right NDT technique (UT, RT, MT or PT)? |
| Scope | Is the certification relevant to the job to be done? |
| Validity | Is the certificate valid? |
| Requirement | Is the certification satisfying the requirement of the project? |
The main point here is simple:
Don’t look for the certificate first. Instead, make sure the certificate is valid and fits the job you’re doing.
Step 1: Find Out Which Organization Issued the Certification
Start by looking at the name of the organization mentioned on the certificate.
Ask yourself these questions:
– Who is the organization that gave the certificate?
– Does this organization only offer training or do they also issue certifications?
– Which certification program is being followed?
– Are there specific places where the certification is given?
For ISO 9712 personnel certification, the system is a third-party way of checking if something meets standards. According to ISO, ISO 9712 sets the rules for qualifying and certifying industrial NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) personnel.
Step 2: Check the Certificate Number
Look for the certificate number or registration number. If the certification organization has an online tool to check certificates, use that instead of the PDF sent by the inspector.
A good verification report should tell you the certificate number and confirm that it is linked to the right person and their certification.
Step 3: Check the Inspector’s Details
Look at what is on the certificate holder’s record:
– Full name
– Identification details, if provided
– Certificate number
– Certification information
Even if a certificate is valid, it doesn’t always mean the current inspector is certified.
Step 4: Check Which NDT Method Was Used for Certification
This is an area where many people miss important details. If your inspection involves ultrasonic testing, make sure the certificate covers ultrasonic testing (UT).
The same rule applies to these NDT methods:
– RT – Radiographic Testing
– UT – Ultrasonic Testing
– MT – Magnetic Testing
– PT – Penetrant Testing
– ET – Eddy Current Testing
– VT – Visual Testing
Being certified in one NDT method doesn’t automatically mean you are certified in all others. These methods are clearly defined in the ISO 9712:2021 standard.
Step 5: Consider the Sector and the Scope
Ask yourself:
Is this certificate valid for the type of inspection I need?
Sometimes the answer isn’t enough. Depending on the program and project needs, the sector, technique, or scope may also be important. This becomes especially important when evaluating NDT inspectors working in areas like manufacturing, welding, fabrication, rail transport, oil and gas, power plants, or other industries.
Step 6: Check the Certificate’s Validity
Look at the issue date and the date the certificate expires. If there are any rules for renewing, recertifying, or keeping the certificate current, make sure the certificate is still valid before deciding.
If there are questions about the certificate staying valid, check the latest guidelines for ISO 9712 recertification.
Step 7: Make Sure It’s a Certification, Not Just Training
This is very important. A training certificate means someone attended or passed a course, but it doesn’t prove the person is certified to the necessary standards.
When looking at the documents, ask:
Is this a training certificate, or is this a certification according to a recognized scheme? These are two different things.
Step 8: Match It to the Job Requirements
The final step isn’t just asking:
“Is this a real NDT certificate?”
It’s asking:
“Is this a valid certificate for doing NDT in this job?”
Look at the certificate in the context of:
– Customer requirements
– Project requirements
– Relevant codes and standards
– Contract requirements
– Inspection requirements
– Required NDT method
Required sector or scope This is where checking certificates is part of proper due diligence.
One of the most common reasons for confusion is the difference between NDT training and NDT personnel certification.Training helps people learn the skills and knowledge needed for the job, while certification is an official document showing that someone meets all the required standards.
For a manufacturer, this distinction is important because even though their quality system or customer might require certified NDT personnel, they may only have trained individuals.
First Welding Certification Pvt Ltd provides NDT personnel qualification and certification in accordance with ISO 9712.
Quality managers need to be especially careful in this area.
Unlike some other certifications, SNT-TC-1A isn’t a certificate from an independent third party.
Instead, it’s a certification framework that is tied to an employer’s own system.
In response to questions from employers who wanted to verify certifications issued by training organizations, ASNT issued an advisory on June 11, 2026.
The advisory explained that SNT-TC-1A is meant to help employers create their own written procedures for qualifying and certifying personnel. It also pointed out that some training institutions were issuing certificates that claimed to be SNT-TC-1A compliant, but weren’t actually connected to an employer’s written system.
So, when looking at any SNT-TC-1A certificate, you should ask yourself these questions:
– Who actually certified the person?
– Which written practice was used?
– Is the certification connected to an employer?
– Does the document accurately show how the certification was done?
– Is that certification system approved by the customer or the project?
For a comparison, you can check our article: ISO 9712 vs ASNT SNT-TC-1A: Which NDT Certification Should Indian Technicians Go For?
If a document shows any of these signs, it needs more checking:
– It doesn’t have a certificate number or the number is unclear
– It doesn’t have an issuing organization or it’s not clear who issued it
– It can’t be checked on its own
– The name or identification doesn’t match up
– The certificate has expired
– The wrong NDT method was used for the inspection
– The certificate isn’t related to the job being done
– It shows a training certificate instead of one for personnel
– It has an SNT-TC-1A certificate but there’s no clear link to an employer or written practice
– The dates or other info on the certificate don’t match up
– It has logos instead of proper information
A red flag doesn’t always mean the document is fake.
This means the quality manager needs to pause and check the document carefully.
Before you can use the NDT certification, make sure you check off these items on the checklist:
– The name of the organization that issued the certificate
– The certificate number
– Confirm the certificate is valid through an official method
– Check that the person named on the certificate is correct
– Verify the certification program used
– Confirm the NDT method listed on the certificate
– Check the specific industry or technique or area if needed
– Ensure the certificate is still active
– Compare the training certificate with the personal certification
– Check if the certificate needs to be renewed or reconfirmed
– Match the SNT-TC-1A qualifications with the employer’s written procedures
– Compare the certificate with what the customer or project needs
– Keep a record of all these checks in the quality documents
The key rule for quality managers is:
Certificate received → Check the issuer → Check the certificate → Check the holder → Check the NDT method → Check the industry or technique or area → Check validity → Check against customer or project needs → Keep the records in the quality system
This is safer than just keeping the certificate in the inspector’s file.
Identify the issuer, use the certificate number for authentication using an authorized verification means where possible, match the certificate to the individual, and validate the method, scope and current validity in relation to the project requirements.
Begin from the certification body that issued the certificate and use their authorized means of verification where possible. Also, validate the current validity and certification requirements of the certificate.
Some certification bodies have an online validation system for certificates or personnel. Where there is no publicly available database, you can contact the certification body for validation through the authorized means.
No, training certificate and personnel certification serve different functions. It is determined by the relevant customer/project/standard/certification scheme whether training or personnel certification document should be presented.
Yes, a credential can be real but not suitable for a certain assignment because the method, sector, scope, certification scheme or contractual requirement may not match.
Validate the certifying employer and the relevant Written Practice. SNT-TC-1A is a certification program that exists through the employer, so the connection with the employer’s certification system matters. The ASNT specifically brought this problem up in its advisory dated June 2026.
Refer to the NABCB Personnel Certification webpage, where there is a list of personnel certification organizations along with accreditation details.
An NDT certificate shouldn’t be trusted just because it’s an official document.
For a Quality Manager, the right way to check an NDT certificate is to look at the whole chain:
Issuer → Certificate Number → Identification → Certification Program → Technique → Application → Expiration Date → Project Specification
The goal isn’t to find a fake certificate.
It’s to make sure the person doing the NDT work has a real, current certification that matches the job they’re doing.
If your organization needs independent certification for your NDT personnel, the PZVAR ISO 9712 NDT Personnel Certification program is the best way to connect to the right certification process.
Your quality management system will only find value in a certificate if you can be sure to answer this question:
“Is this credential valid and suitable for the inspection work being done?”
Ensure your NDT personnel have valid, traceable and relevant certification for your inspection requirements. First Welding Certification Pvt Ltd (PRVÁ ZVÁRAČSKÁ, a. s.) provides ISO 9712 NDT personnel qualification and certification for applicable NDT methods and scopes.
