EN 15085 Certification – Ensuring Quality in Welding of Railway Vehicles
EN 15085 Certification: Ensuring Quality in Railway Welding
PZ as a Manufacturer Certification Body (MCB), recognized/accredited by the European Committee for Welding of Railway Vehicles (ECWRV).
We certify OEMs of railway coaches, locomotives, wagons & metros and components manufacturers of bogies, side walls, end walls, underframes, roofs, couplers, braking systems, doors, seats, tanks etc.,
This European standard (EN 15085) ensures the highest quality, reliability and safety in welding for railway vehicles and components.
What is EN 15085 Certification?
- It is a certification scheme that ensures companies working on railway vehicles or parts have the technical capability, qualified personnel, and quality systems to carry out welding safely and reliably.
It covers the design, manufacture, repair, and maintenance of welded components in the rail sector.
- As a certification body, we audit and certify organizations to confirm that their welding operations, documentation, and quality systems meet EN 15085 standards.
EN 15085 Certification Levels
EN 15085 certification defines capability levels (CL) based on the safety relevance of welded components:
- CL1 – Highest safety relevance: bogies, brake systems, car bodies, fuel tanks, roof structures, side walls, end walls, power transmission parts, etc.
- CL2 – Medium safety relevance: passenger coaches, cab equipment, seating frames, pressurised air pipes, non-pressurised containers, etc.
- CL3 – Low safety relevance: switch cabinets, striking plates, window frames, ventilation grills, and simple attached parts.
EN 15085 Certification Process
As a manufacturer certification body (MCB), we conduct the following steps:
- Application & Document Review
Review of WPS, WPQR, WPQ, Welding Quality Manual, Procedures including NDT procedures, weld map, weld plan, weld sequence, and qualifications of Welding Coordination Personnel (EN ISO 14731). - Assessment & Audit
ECWRV recognized auditor perform on-site evaluations to confirm compliance with EN 15085-2 requirements (CL1- CL3). - Testing & Qualification
Verification of welding processes and personnel through destructive & non-destructive testing, visual inspection, and qualification checks. - Quality Management System (QMS) Verification
Confirmation that the organization has implemented a welding quality management system aligned with EN 15085 requirements.
