FAQ
What is the necessary level of EN 15085 certification for our railway products/components and welding works?
The relevant level of the certificate should be chosen in accordance with the type and importance of the welded railway vehicle or component, welding works carried out, and the extent of the certificate. The manufacturer’s range of products/components and their production activities and the requirements of the EN 15085 standard series are taken into consideration.
What should a railway manufacturer document for EN 15085 certification?
It may include the defined extent of the certificate, the structure of the organisation, welding coordination, Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Welding Procedure Qualification Records (WPQR), qualifications of welders/welding operators, production planning documentation, documentation of material traceability, test and inspection procedures, calibration documentation and documentation of welding quality.
Is it possible to certify a number of railway components/processes/manufacturing locations with one EN 15085 certificate scope?
The certificate scope is defined based on the railway products/components, welding activities, welding processes, materials used, production activities, and manufacturing locations that are subject to the evaluation. When there are several manufacturing locations, the relevant activities and welding controls at each of these manufacturing locations should be considered.
We produce rail vehicle parts but outsource the welding processes. Do we still require EN 15085 certification?
The need for certification depends on the responsibilities of the company regarding the production of the welded rail vehicle component. In cases where welding has been subcontracted, the company needs to outline the outsourcing welding operations, requirements, etc.
What are the technical documents that should be prepared by our company prior to an EN 15085 certification audit?
These documents could consist of the intended scope of certification, organisational structure, welding coordination function, WPS, WPQR, qualifications of welder and welding operator, production planning, materials information, testing and inspection methods, NDT reports, equipment reports, and welding quality reports.
